The role: Department Head of UI Design

We are looking for a Department Head of UI Design to join our busy and dynamic Product Management team in our Leeds office.

Why we need you:-

As the Department Head of UI Design, you will be integral to the customer centric design process the team adopts today, as well as contributing to the continued growth and company awareness of UCD. In this role, the successful candidate will demonstrate a real passion for user-centred design and design fidelity, mentor members of the team, and collaborate with managers of other UX, Product, and Development teams to secure consistency across all products.

As the Department Head of UI Design, you will be a great design thinker and a visionary providing design direction for a small team of UI designers. You will lead others through example and collaboration in creating simple user experiences within a complex industry. You will also take time to understand the performance side of design and the business aspects of the products. 

You will work closely with brand, marketing and product, and be responsible for helping to drive the visual design vision for the overall look and feel for the Stars digital experiences. With your team you will manage the Stars UI Kit/styleguides, socialising them with design teams across the Group to secure consistency for our customers, while also taking responsibility for the quality of design across central products.

You’ll drive the tools and processes for UI designers, working with UX Architects and sharing responsibility for prototype production for user testing research and demos. A will form part of the CXD management team to help embed seamless processes and collaborate on the delivery of first-class cross channel designs.

You will ensure UI Designers embed their work in the CX Design process, clearly communicating design decisions and working closely with developers on transitions and technical feasibility, whilst working with UX Researchers to use insights to inform design choices understanding the customer need and sentiment translating these into engaging and usable designs.

There is a requirement for you to work on a number of different projects touching various products and platforms (including native apps and responsive sites), and work with wider CXD team to shape how work is delivered. You will involve and collaborate with technical teams, and recruit, lead and mentor a small team of UI Designers instilling a collaborative culture and prioritising work load appropriately. While also managing 3rd party design resource when needed.

Who are we looking for:-

You will have a comprehensive understanding of user centred design and experience of being an integral part of a UX team from an in-house environment. Experience managing a small team of UI Designers is important, as is being an effective communicator and willing team player.

You’ll have experience designing solutions for all channels (responsive and native) and be well versed in Sketch, Illustrator, InVision, Zeplin and Creative Suite.

As the ideal candidate, you will have:-

Significant experience as an in-house UI Designer having worked collaboratively in cross-functional teams with designers, product managers and developers. Technical knowledge of front-end mobile and web technologies and experience creating and maintaining design guides for use across multiple products and distributed teams is essential.

You will have excellent communication skills with the ability to listen, articulate positions and advocate designs, as well as having knowledge and a real passion for the latest design tools and industry standards.
